Margherita is Africa’s third highest peak at a height of 5109 meters above sea level. The hike on Mountain Rwenzori is an exciting and rewarding experience of which the real beauty is in the climb itself. However, getting up to the peak is no easy climb and requires you to be somewhat fit and well prepared. Expect to explore the unspoiled forests and valleys with diverse flora and fauna along the trail. If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of the resident chimpanzees as they scamper in the forest. While at the peak, expect to see glaciers and/ or snow all by yourself with spectacular views across the Rwenzori Ranges.

Itinerary

Day One: You will be picked up from an agreed location in Kampala at 7am and driven for a distance of about 400Km to Kasese town passing via Ganyina Mwiru Waterfalls in Fort Portal. Arrive at Sandton Hotel in the evening. Check-in, have dinner and sleep early.

Day Two: After an early breakfast starting at 6am, you will be transported to the Rwenzori Park Entry Gate, where you will meet your guides for briefing at 8am, and also get climbing equipment. Begin your hike at 1,450 meters, climbing to Sine Hut at 2,596 meters making a height gain of 1,146 meters. Fit clients can proceed to Kalalama Camp which is at 3,134 meters. Expect to see Enock Falls near the Sine Hut Campsite, many different bird species and primates such as the white colobus monkeys or blue monkeys as well as fantastic views of the valleys and hills below, and views of Lake George and Queen Elizabeth National Park in the far distance.

Day Three: Hike to Mutinda Camp at 3,725 meters, where you will spend the night. The trail twists and turns as you climb up the deep valley that has an enormous variety of plants and flowers. The day’s highlights include fascinating high altitude plant species such as Giant Lobelias and views of Kasese town and Lake George from a different perspective.

Day Four: Hike to Bugata Camp at 4,100 meters passing via Namusanga Valley (3,840 meters) where you get to see sheer waterfalls and on looking back you get fantastic views of Mutinda peaks. Highlights include: Views of Lake Kopello on Weismann’s Peak, which is often covered with snow.

Day Seven: Wake up at 2am, have an early meal and start climbing Mt Stanley at 2:30am so as to get to Margherita peak by 10am. If you do not reach the peak by 10am you must turn around regardless of the disappointment in the interests of safety. For clients with less mountaineering experience we suggest that you stay on Stanley glacier and climb up to a good vantage point on a rocky outcrop on the southern edge of Alexandra Peak to enjoy fantastic views over Congo and the lower mountain ridges. The day’s highlight will be getting to the 3rd highest peak in Africa.

After ascending to the peak at 5,109 meters, you will then descend to Hunwick's Camp to rest.
